Expanding our Scope of Practice

From the Desk of Dr. Lee

Hello Friends, Naturopathic Physicians (or doctors as our license reads in Minnesota) are calling on the federal and state governments to include us in their plans to combat the Corona Virus. One of the therapies that is being used in some countries and states (notably New York) is vitamin C infusions to successfully combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking only for myself, I have been fully trained for years in infusion therapy including Vitamin C therapy. I know how to do it. I know the contraindication. I know how to prescribe it. I know it backward and forward. And yet, I can’t do it in the state of Minnesota because Naturopathic Doctors like myself are not allowed to. It isn’t in our scope of practice. And we must ask, why is that?  There is a lot of history behind it, but simply put, it’s because the legislature doesn't want to allow us. There is, as far as I know, no rational reason to not allow medical school graduates who are trained in the use of prescriptive substances, to prescribe and treat patients with them. There is so much more we could be doing for you. Every Naturopathic Doctor (ND) I know in this state and others are willing and ready to step up. And in those states where NDs have this simple prescriptive right in their scope of practice, they are stepping up. They are helping hospitals. They are on the front lines. And we would like to be in this fight even more than we already are. Realistically I don’t expect this to change soon, but it could change. Contact your state representatives and ask them why the state isn’t using ALL of its medical resources to help in this fight. Why has the state hobbled part of the medical system? Why isn’t it using its Naturopathic Doctors to help? All it would take is a small change in Public Law 147E. If you want to have more tools available to you and your family, then consider taking a moment and making a call or writing a letter or sending an email to your state and federal representatives. I know they are busy. But busy people miss things because they are busy. So, if you call or write, be polite and respect the time of your representatives, and then, just like your mother told you to, don’t forget to say please and thank you. Remember, we are all in this together and together we will get through this. Here is a link to the position paper of the National Association of Naturopathic Physicians. It’s worth a quick read. Click Here! To read more about the Vitamin C Infusion therapy for COVID-19, Click Here! I recommend contacting my friends at New Hope Healing and Resource Center in Alexandria, MN to learn more about their IV Infusion Services! If however, you can’t get Vitamin C infusions, then I strongly recommend that you take at least 2000mg a day or more, up to bowel tolerance (a fancy way to say until you get loose stool and then reduce your dose by one capsule) if you think you might be getting sick. Vitamin C, in any form, is hard to find right now, so go to our order page at https://www.edgewatermed.com/order and sign up for Nutridyn, which seems to have the most stable supply. For general use, I like this one! Thank you. Be safe. Be well. And reach out to us if you need our help. Dr. Lee
